Something old something new
something borrowed something blue
and a sixpence in her shoe"

brides hand with pearls

Where did this come from?

Many people say that this all started in the Victorian era, but what we do know is that it's definitely English.

Something old - the marriage will be blessed by carrying something old, identifying with her family, through to her new family.

Something new - this symbolises new hope and optimism

Something borrowed - this would normally come from a close friend or family member who passes their good luck forward to the bride and groom.

Something blue - this symbolises purity, Christians have long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue and in the early 19th century, blue wedding gowns were very popular - hence the saying " Marry in blue, lover be true!.

The sixpence is to bring wealth and financial security.

Planning your wedding doesn't mean that you have to have an endless pocket of money behind you, but it does mean you should pay attention to the fine details that make your wedding special to you and your partner.

Organising it can be a bit of a headache, so it's a good idea to plan early, discuss your ideas together, and your budget, so you can both have the day you deserve.
